I’d like new kitchen lighting, where do I start?

Considering the location of natural and artificial lighting within our design schemes, helps us to  set a mood for our space and get the most enjoyment from using our kitchen/dining space.  Equally we can use lighting to show off our furniture, accessories and artwork to the fullest.  You’ll also need to take into account practical reasons for lighting, I.e. aid food preparation, eating, washing up, homework and a number of other tasks.  Considering how your kitchen will be used by your household when making your lighting decisions, will help to ensure you get the best use of your kitchen.

Consider practicality too!

• What are the main tasks lighting is needed for in the kitchen?
• Which areas do you use mostly?
• Whats the height of your ceiling?
• Where are your kitchen doors positioned?
• How much space is there between cabinets and the ceiling  for lighting?
• Is there space on worktops and units for lighting?
• What other lighting sources are already available in your kitchen?

What should I consider when choosing kitchen flooring?

You’re likely to have established a style for your kitchen by now, based on your personal style.  Considering how your kitchen will be used by your household when making your decision about the type of flooring will help to ensure that you make the right choice first time.  Consideration about degree of future maintenance when making your final decision is also wise.  The wide range of flooring alternatives means that there’s something for every budget.

Consider practicality too!

1. Is the main access to your home via your kitchen?
2. Is your kitchen subject to high traffic?
3. Would your space work better with floor tiles or hardwood flooring or both?
4. How well does your floor covering cope with necessary cleaning routines?
5. What maintenance does your floor finish need?
6. Will the new flooring, offer easy access to crawl space(where applicable)?

These questions are intended to help galvanise your thinking about your requirements for your kitchen flooring.

Types of flooring

Hard flooring

Hard flooring is easy to look after.  Solid wood flooring such as Walnut is timeless and makes any room in the house feel luxurious, particularly the kitchen.

Laminate flooring

Laminate flooring (certain ranges) is an ideal alternative for kitchen/dining spaces.  If you like the idea of wood but without the high costs, try a good quality laminate, which is stain-resistant, durable and chip proof in addition to being low maintenance.  Flooring finishes available include cherry, beech, oak and Walnut.

Engineered flooring

Engineered, veneered or real wood top layer flooring is made up of both softwood or man-made board with a thin layer of solid timber bonded to the surface.

Vinyl

Vinyl is excellent for kitchens due to waterproof qualities in addition to being warm underfoot.  Available on the roll it remains an affordable option.

Floor tiles

Their extensive  range including ceramic, porcelain, slate, limestone, stone, and rubber finishes, textures, colour’s, sizes and surfaces, make them attractive and appealing for kitchen environments.  The vast range of floor tiles and their versatility makes the process of  complimenting other elements in the kitchen such as worktop finishes easier than ever.

What should I consider when choosing my wall finish(s)?

The type of wall finish you choose is likely to be based on your personal style and the function of that particular finish.  You may prefer the sleek look of brick tiles above the hob and sink area or you might prefer to have a mixture of tiles and contemporary splash-back.  You’re at the stage of your design where you can really have a lot of fun with your selections.  You may want  to consider how you will manage the maintenance of the wall finishes you select.  Most finishes and applications are aimed at making surfaces wipeable and when correctly fitted and used, prevent moisture building up behind and in between materials.  Wall finishes are now available in a variety of  affordable options to meet most budgets, so don’t worry about not being able to find something that’s right for you.

Consider practicality too!

1. Do you want a splash-back in the cooking area or sink or both?
2. Opting for a glass splash-back for your sink area, how much maintenance is needed to ensure it always looks its best?
3. Will you use paint and tiles or all tiles?
4. Using tiles, what look/feel do you want for your kitchen?
5. Are you keen on bright colours or do you prefer neutral colours?
6. Are you selling your home now or imminently? If so have you selected a finish that buyers will welcome?

These questions are intended to help galvanise your thinking about your requirements for your wall finish(s).

Designing with paint

Lets face it painting has become very fashionable.  There are many paint companies including well-known companies such as Dulux who produce, colour swatches, opportunities to create and match your own colours and advice in booklet and video how to formats.   What does this mean for me as a customer?  It means that the choice is endless and you can now enjoy selecting and  achieving that special colour scheme for your kitchen walls that you would have only been able to dream about in the past.  Consider lighting sources in your space and where your paint finish will be used.  Remember to consider the types of finish such as matt or vinyl silk, eggshell and that whatever you choose is fit for purpose.  You don’t want to end up with a matt finish in the kitchen directly next to the cooking area for example.  If you want to recap on considerations for selecting wall coverings and finishes to help you finalize your choices, take a further look at Room In A Boxx’s From The Top Series – Wall Coverings and Finishes.

Designing with tiles

Tiling, always a favourable option in kitchen design.  This phenomenon concept of tiling is increasing  with variations in styles and materials available on the market coupled with their multiple applications and vibrant colourways.

Tiles, not instant in their application have a way of capturing so many moods not easily captured by the use of paint finishes and some other applications.  Their ability to transform a space should not be underestimated and yet their downfall is sometimes the initial outlay needed to create such as look, that often burdens the individuals budget.  If we can overcome this factor, we can achieve so much more through their use and recognise the cost effectiveness of using them with regards to reduced maintenance through their lifespan.

Designing with Splash-backs/upstands

An increasingly popular alternative to tiles, offering options particularly in vibrant glass.  CP Group UK, produces a range of Enki splashbacks in 20 colourways including Lime, Popsicle and Saffron.  In addition the CP Group have created a limited edition monochromatic Cityscape 2012 splash-back, featuring iconic British architecture including London’s skyline of recognisable buildings, Tower Bridge, Big Ben, the Gherkin, St Paul’s Cathedral and the London Eye, sure to wow any kitchen.  Equally you might like the idea of having your splash back personalised for your space.  Pimpyourkitchen.co.uk does bespoke splash-backs.
